Potassium Methoxide, CAS 865-33-8, is an alkali metal alkoxide and strong base. It is also known as Potassium Methylate and Potassium Methanolate.
Potassium Methoxide is widely used as a strong base, chemical reagent and catalyst in organic synthesis and industrial chemical manufacturing. It is particularly useful in transesterification reactions, including biodiesel production, and can also be used in methoxylation and other chemical synthesis processes.
Commercial Potassium Methoxide is commonly supplied as a methanolic solution or as a solid powder, depending on the application and product grade. Typical commercial solutions include approximately 31–33% Potassium Methoxide in methanol.

1. Used as a condensing agent and as a strong basic catalyst in the production of methyl formate, dimethyl carbonate, and dimethylformamide;
2. Used in the production of pharmaceutical products—such as sulfonamides (e.g., sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, sulfameter, sulfabenzamide), trimethoprim, fluorenylmethanol, Vitamin A, and Vitamin B1—as well as pesticides;
3. Used as a catalyst for processing edible fats and oils, as a tanning agent for leather, and as an analytical reagent.
