Tetrabromoethane is a white or light yellow flammable liquid that smells like camphor and iodoform. Miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, aniline and glacial acetic acid, but insoluble in water. It can decompose when exposed to light and heat and turn yellow. Above 190°C, the decomposition product is highly toxic carbonyl bromide vapor.
