Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is predominantly utilized as an excipient and functional material in the pharmaceutical sector. Owing to its excellent water solubility, film-forming properties, and biocompatibility, it finds extensive applications in drug delivery systems and medical devices. In ophthalmic formulations, PVA serves as a thickening agent and lubricant in artificial tear solutions to alleviate dry eye symptoms, and is also employed in contact lens care solutions. Furthermore, PVA serves as an ideal carrier for sustained-release drug formulations, including microspheres, nanoparticles, or thin films, to modulate the release kinetics of therapeutic agents such as anticancer drugs and antibiotics. In wound care, PVA is combined with materials like chitosan to fabricate absorbable dressings that facilitate wound healing. Additionally, it functions as a component of medical adhesives for surgical suture assistance or as a lubricating coating for condoms.
