Copper sulfate pentahydrate Applications
Industrial applications: Used in the manufacture of other copper salts such as cuprous chloride, cupric chloride, copper pyrophosphate, cuprous oxide, copper acetate, and copper carbonate; and copper monoazo dyes such as reactive brilliant blue and reactive violet.
In the coatings industry, Copper sulfate pentahydrate is used in the production of antifouling paints for ship hulls.
In the electroplating industry, Copper sulfate pentahydrate is used as the main salt for full-brightness acidic copper plating and as a copper ion additive.
In the printing and dyeing industry, Copper sulfate pentahydrate is used as a mordant and an oxygenating agent for finely dyed fabrics.
In the organic industry, Copper sulfate pentahydrate is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of fragrance and dye intermediates, and as a polymerization inhibitor for methyl methacrylate.
Anhydrous copper salts are used to catalyze the conversion of acetals. Anhydrous copper salts react with potassium permanganate to produce an oxidant used for the conversion of primary alcohols.
Agricultural applications: When mixed with lime water, it forms Bordeaux mixture, used as a fungicide to control fungi on crops and prevent fruit rot; due to the toxicity of copper ions to fish, the dosage must be strictly controlled. In aquaculture, it is also used as a feed additive, a major trace element of copper.
