5-Sulfoisophthalic Acid Monosodium Salt Application
1. Used as an intermediate and modifier for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and polyesters.
2. A dyeing modifier for polyester, used in the production of modified polyester chips.
3. 5-Sulfoisophthalic Acid Monosodium Salt (5-SSIPA) is commonly used to prepare amine-free water-borne polyester resins and polyurethanes suitable for various coatings. Typically, the reaction yields a water-soluble polyester resin with a high acid value, which is then neutralized with an amine to form a water-soluble salt. Polyesters synthesized with 5-SSIPA are water-borne, a property attributed to the ionic nature of the sodium sulfonate group. Its aromatic dicarboxylic acid structure is similar to that of Eastman PIA (Purified Isophthalic Acid); the aromatic ring structure imparts excellent hardness and high gloss to the coating. The lithium salt analogue of 5-SSIPA is a more polar monomer that imparts greater water solubility to the resin, allowing for lower dosage levels. 5-SSIPA is a monomer used to synthesize polyester resins for food packaging adhesives, an application approved by the FDA.
Properties: Water-dispersible resins do not require amine neutralizing agents.
Coatings exhibit excellent hardness and high gloss.
Improves the dyeability and lightfastness of polyester and nylon fibers.
Enhances the printability of inks used on PET bottles.
Provides excellent interlayer adhesion for magnetic tapes.
