The role of Diisopropanolamine (DIPA) in acid gas treatment process

2025-01-18

Diisopropanolamine (Di-Isopropanol [DIPA] [CAS No 110-97-4] ) has the following main roles in acid gas treatment process:

1. Acid gas absorption: The amine group in the diisopropanolamine molecule is alkaline in aqueous solution and can react chemically with acid gas, thereby absorbing and removing acid gas from the mixed gas. For example, in the process of natural gas and petroleum refining, it can effectively remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from natural gas and other industrial gases, and can reduce the acid gas content in natural gas to below 0.1%, greatly improving the quality and safety of natural gas.

2. Improve the degree of purification: Compared with some other alcohol amine absorbents, diisopropanolamine has a higher absorption capacity and selectivity for acid gas, which can make the treated gas reach a higher degree of purification and meet the requirements of subsequent processes or products. In the sulfoneamine method, the mixed solvent composed of diisopropanolamine, cyclopentane sulfone and water has great advantages in treating high-pressure and high-concentration H₂S gas, which can reduce the acid gas concentration in the treated gas to a very low level.

3. Reduce equipment corrosion: Diisopropanolamine has relatively mild corrosion on equipment. Compared with some strong alkaline absorbents, the use of diisopropanolamine can reduce corrosion to equipment, extend the service life of equipment, and reduce equipment maintenance costs.

4. Low reaction heat: The reaction heat generated when diisopropanolamine reacts with acidic gas is low, which helps to reduce energy consumption in the process and reduce operating costs.

5. Not easy to deteriorate and foam: Diisopropanolamine has good stability during use and is not easy to deteriorate and foam. Foaming can cause problems such as flooding in the absorption tower and decreased mass transfer efficiency, and this characteristic of diisopropanolamine can ensure the stable operation of the process.
